About this location

Haarlem, in the Amsterdam region

Leaseweb lists two sites in this region. AMS-01 is at J.W. Lucasweg 35 in Haarlem, and AMS-02 is at Capronilaan 2 in Schiphol-Rijk. Your VPS runs in AMS-01, the only one its VPS configurator offers. On Leaseweb's own figures AMS-01 is Tier III, with 9 carriers and 26 Internet Exchanges available.

The region's internet history, by date

  • 1994: AMS-IX says it began when academic institutes at the Science Park in Amsterdam wanted to exchange data directly. NIKHEF, SARA, CWI, SURFnet and NLnet were involved.
  • 2023: The Dutch Data Center Association reported that 71.9% of Dutch colocation data centers are in the Amsterdam Metro Region. It named access to enough power as the biggest challenge.
  • 15 April 2026: AMS-IX reached a traffic peak of 15 Tbit/s, around 21:00 CEST.
  • 5 November 2026: The AMS-IX site showed a peak of 15.822 Tb/s and 913 connected networks. PeeringDB listed NL-ix, a second Netherlands-based exchange, with 536 networks and 83 facilities.

Subsea cables land on the North Sea coast west of Amsterdam. TeleGeography lists Circe North, Concerto and Zeus at Zandvoort, Ulysses 2 and Scylla at IJmuiden, and Atlantic Crossing-1 at Beverwijk. Zeus, Concerto, Circe North and Scylla link the Netherlands and the UK. Atlantic Crossing-1 also lists Germany and the United States.

Who should run a server here

The nearest large populations are in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, the UK, Ireland, western Germany and the Nordics. Amsterdam makes sense for any of them, and for a site that serves several at once. It is a poor main location for users in Asia-Pacific, because distance dominates there. For them, look at Singapore.

City facts describe the place, not this service, and we claim no connection to any exchange or cable named here. Figures with no date were read in November 2026. Sources: AMS-IX peak, AMS-IX history, Dutch Data Center Association, PeeringDB, TeleGeography, Leaseweb.

Questions

Before you choose Amsterdam

Should I pick Amsterdam or Frankfurt?

Both offer the same six plans with 30 TB of traffic. Entry prices are $8.99 a month here and $8.99 in Frankfurt. So decide by measuring: from where your users are, ping the test IP on each page and keep the location with the better result.

Why Haarlem, when the location is called Amsterdam?

Leaseweb lists both of its sites in this region under the name Amsterdam. AMS-01 itself is in Haarlem, and we show the town so that you know where your server is.

Which speed test host matches this VPS?

Use speedtest.ams1.nl.leaseweb.net, the host on this page. Leaseweb's list also has speedtest.ams2.nl.leaseweb.net, but that server is in AMS-02, not in the building your VPS runs in. The network test guide explains how to read the result.

Can one Amsterdam server cover all of Europe?

It is a sensible single location for Western Europe. If most of your users are in Germany, Austria, Switzerland or further east, compare Frankfurt. If most are in the UK and Ireland, compare London.
